    @Estonia: Actually, the ZIS and ZIL 150-series trucks were pretty much a straight copy of the larger International K-series truck built during the 1940s - plenty of which were used in Europe during World War II.

    Pretty badass truck that was in production for a very long time. Wonder what thoughts when through the stylists' heads when they designed that grille? "No western decadence for us - let's make it as ugly and menacing as possible".

    However, when the zombie hordes come invading, this amphibious ZIL 4096 might be the best way to get your family to safety. After all, I don't think zombies can swim yet.

    On a time wasting expedition catalyzed by the NHTSA crash test story of a couple of days ago I dug around on the GSAAuctions.gov and came across this beauty for….. $50. Sure it does run and it’s in Arkansas or somewhere else far away but so awesome nonetheless. The GSA site is down but here's a pic of the same rig, m656 I believe.

    @Fletch Lives: Update - GSA site is back up and the price for the m656 is up to 1600 bucks. Now perhaps not such a good deal for an 'inoperable' vehicle - but the bed is chock full of tires.

    @Buickboy92: But only if you get the tanker variant or the small countries are very close by. 1-2MPG and only 2 45 gallon gas tanks. This thing has a range almost as bad as my 67 Imperial when I ran it off a 10 gallon boat gas tank in the trunk.

    @JeepyJayhawk: The regular tank was rusted out when I got the car, a convertible by the way, and would only hold about 1/3 tank before it started leaking. The car was in rough shape when I had it, but the 440 still ran great. I went to the Bass Pro shop and found a 10 gallon plastic gas tank that I securely strapped down in the trunk and ran rubbe fuel line to it. It stayed that way the whole 2 years or so that I drove it. I just gassed up before I went anywhere and kept a spare gallon can in the trunk.

    New replacement tanks weren't made at the time, at least I couldn't find one. And I didn't have the funds/time for a better fix.

    I take personal pride in identifying and referencing Skodas and Trabants in an Eastern-European sourced post-cold war gay porno from Bel Ami (titled "Lucky Lucas", FYI). Here is the lead-in to the review that I wrote (note the date!) SAFE FOR WORK/MIXED COMPANY:

    Car Culture... Eastern-European Style 7/7/2003

    "What is it about young guys, cars, and sex? The combination just goes together so well! OK, so in this DVD they are driving Skodas, Trabants, and Minis, instead of Integras and Civics, but Lukas and his buds are definitely into cars... and [redacted]!... "

    @Murilee Martin:

    Since the opening up of the former Eastern bloc countries, the gay porn producers are taking full advantage of the available handsome Caucasian guys raised in a culture less hung up about guy-on-guy sex for money, whether gay or straight in private life.

    Many old cold-war structures are left behind in all their griminess, and I have more than one modern plot-laden gay porno set in a gulag-type prison, and another in a large vacant factory space (don't know if they made tractors...)

    I was going to buy this book, but then Murilee called the Hillman Imp "wretched." As a Rootes Group enthusiast, I'm easily offended... I guess I'll never be able to learn about Soviet cars now, because mean ol' Murilee doesn't see the beauty in a tiny British Corvair with a Coventry Climax engine.

    Still, racing Imps had around 130 horses from 998cc. What's not to like about that?
